Our story is one of legacy, passed down, refined, and reimagined through every era. Here’s how we became Camm Upholstery.
1929
E.J. CAMM
Opened 1929 in Glenferrie Road after working for a big Melbourne Firm.
1940s-1985
EDWARD & JAMES CAMM
Edward and James Camm began their journey in the upholstery trade in the 1940s, taking over the family business and continuing its legacy of hands-on craftsmanship. They operated from a small premises on Glenferrie Road in Malvern, where the workshop quickly became a family-driven enterprise. Supporting them were two dedicated sewers—Dorris, Edward’s wife, and Nell Henderson, their aunt—whose skill and precision played a key role in the day-to-day production. Edward’s wife, Eileen, also contributed to the business, managing bookkeeping and front-of-house sales, ensuring operations ran smoothly from both a creative and administrative perspective.
At the time, the business focused on basic upholstery services as well as the crafting of reproduction antique furniture, responding to a strong demand for classic pieces with a traditional touch. After decades of building the brand’s reputation for quality and reliability, Edward and James passed the business on to the next generation in 1985—entrusting it to their sons, who would go on to evolve and expand the Camm Upholstery name into what it is today.
1985-2025
ANTHONY, MARK & HAYDN
Camm Upholstery was founded in 1985 by Haydn and Anthony, with Mark joining three years later to complete the trio. The business began in a modest factory in Huntingdale, where the three founders worked hands-on to bring their shared vision to life. As demand grew, so did the need for space—leading to moves into larger facilities in Cheltenham and then Caulfield, before eventually establishing the permanent workshop in Moorabbin in the early 2000s.
From its early days as a tight-knit, three-person operation, the business steadily expanded into a 15-person team that now includes upholsterers, machinists, and apprentices. A major turning point came with the Donovans project, which marked Camm’s entry into Melbourne’s competitive hospitality scene. This project paved the way for collaborations with some of the city’s most renowned venues, including Chin Chin, Supernormal, Society, Yakimono, Stokehouse, and Vue de Monde.
Over the years, Camm Upholstery has continued to evolve—embracing new technologies, keeping pace with safety standards, and adapting to the ever-changing design landscape. Today, the business works alongside leading designers, architects, and builders to produce high-quality, custom-made pieces that prioritise comfort, aesthetic excellence, and long-term durability.
